Chewie

Owned and loved by Richard, Gerry, Calvin and Steven Bennett
Bred by Kathy Lasher

It was Steven, whom at the age of 12, said, “Mom, he’s going to be one big hairy thing;
I think we should name him Chewbacca like Star Wars.” It was the perfect name for the best dog in the world. Chewie’s stature in life was measured not just by his physical size, but by the enormity of his personality. After taking one look at Chewie, puppy buyers would often say, “I’ll take one of him!” Everybody loved Chewie, and he was a great ambassador for the breed. He was a genuine member of our neighborhood; he went to all the social events and loved the 4th of July picnic. The little kids couldn’t wait for Halloween each year to see Chewie all dressed up in costume, wagging his big tail, engaged, happy, and having fun passing out candy and kisses. In his youth Chewie enjoyed going for long rides in the car, going to the dog park, getting pets, and hanging out with his pack. He enjoyed lying next to new born puppies that would become entangled in his fur as they climbed over his body. When he spotted smaller dogs at the park, he would jump straight into the air and perform a wild dance by shaking his head and levitating off the ground. He was a handsome boy and had one of the best masks and toe-fluff ever. He had the cutest, softest ears that would lie back when he heard his name called which added to his forgiving look. Chewie passed away from complications related to a mild stroke. There is a void that will never be filled. He was such a special boy, and he will be missed.

Winnie-the-Pooh said, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Goodbye Chewbacca. How lucky we were to be loved by you. You are now free to run and bark with your sister Tana, your nieces Addie, Annie and Bella, and all the other wonderful Leos over the bridge.
